Dear Andy,
The warm weather is starting and the school year is ending. What all this means is an influx of youth coming through the doors of the CBC. In April, we saw our highest youth participation ever. We averaged just under 14 kids a day! Our little shop was full of bike and bodies moving about. We look forward to an active summer with plenty of bike work, bike rides, and youth development.

Wheel Appeal Concert - SOLD OUT and ROCKED OUT!!
On Friday, April 4, 2008, the Biddeford City Theater was filled with the jumpin' sounds of the James Montgomery Blues Band and singer-songwriter Bruce Marshall. We sold out the event weeks in advance and we have had folks asking about a concert next year. The event ended up raising $7799.44 to support the CBC. Press releases and posters were plastered across the community in the weeks before the concert, all serving to bring our name into the public eye. Special thanks to Robinson PR and all of our sponsors for making this concert such a successful event: Biddeford Savings Bank, Moulson North Corporation, Peoples Choice Credit Union, Journal Tribune, Saco Biddeford Savings Institution, Sun Chronicle.

Trek Across Maine Cycling Team
The CBC Trek Across Maine Cycling team has reached 36 members, including 10 kids! We have also passed the $100,000 mark for fundraising for the American Lung Association of Maine over the last 9 years. We are reaching hallmarks and we have not even begun the event. The Trek itself will go down on June 13-15, 2008. With only a few days left until the event, we are wrapping up our individual fundraising and pushing forward with the training rides. The rides are not for the weak of heart as we come nearer the 60 mile mark with each ride. There is still time to support us. If you would still like to donate to one of our trekkers, visit our Trekker pages.

Volunteer Spotlight: Chris Yankapoulos (yan-kah-puh-lis)
Chris has begun his six-month term as an AmeriCorps member helping out the CBC. Originally hailing from New Hampshire, Chris came to Southern Maine to major in History, English, and Classics at USM. Just before graduating in May, he began volunteering at the CBC and got hooked. Chris brings to us years of bike knoweldge, riding skills, and a passion for fixed gear bikes. He will be helping run the shop and assist with our volunteer effort. He has some big ideas about how we can impact kid's lives in big ways. Don't forget his name, because he may be contacting you soon about volunteering!

Bike and Walk to School Week
With the support of Andy Greif, a group of volunteers gathered at the Emery School building on May 6th before school began. As a group, they rode their bicycles to Biddeford Middle School. This was the highlight event of the Bike and Walk to School Week activities led by the Community Bicycle Center. Other activities included a helmet give-away and fitting with helmets from the Brain Injury Coalition, free bicycle inspections by CBC staff and BHS Interact member Andrew Ganter, giving out 100 pedometers provided by Anthem, and distributing 750 water bottles and hydration information from the Southern Maine Medical Center. There have even been talks of having a weekly bike-to-school trips. Thank you to everyone involved and we hope to gather more people next year to make it even more successful!

Bike Tour Benefit Concert
A few months ago we were contacted by a mysterious musician who was traveling up the East Coast by bicycle to share her music and support bicycle programs. Biddeford will be one stop on her 110 day, 3200 mile tour. Rachel VanSlyke is her name and she has agreed to play a concert that will benefit the CBC. In 2006, Rachel received top honors in the "Song of the Year" competition on Clear Channel's "New" program. Her music combines rock, pop and classic country and appeals to everyone from teens to the adult alternative crowd. You can visit her website at www.rachelvanslyke.com. She will be playing at the Union House Cafe in the North Dam Mill on June 13th at 7:30. Support the CBC and an rising musician by attending the concert.

ICE: In Case of Emergency
A British paramedic came up with the idea of asking the public to program their emergency contact information into their cellphone address book under the entry: "ICE" (for "In Case of Emergency"). With this entry should include the name of the emergency contact and their number. The initiative was launched in Britian in April 2005. It has taken hold in America and has been featured in articles in USA Today and the Washington Post.
Paramedics have commented on the difficulty associated with encountering an injured person who does not carry next-of-kin or emergency contacts. Programming ICE in your cell phone will give medical personnel another means of finding your essential information. Remember to also keep your contact information near your Photo ID in your wallet or purse. Be safe as you go out on your summer bike rides!
