Dear Andy,

Thank you for taking the time to check out the second Community Bicycle Center e-Newsletter.  We have experienced some incredible things in the past two months. With your help, we placed in the top three in the Community Matters More campaign by Bangor Savings Bank. We received a $5,000 grant as a result of our great support! We became the first write-in candidate to win a top prize. Plus we were able to get to word out about the CBC because of your efforts.

To everyone who filled a ballot,

thank you so much.

You were part of accomplishing something great!

Youth Spotlight: Sean Boissonneault

Sean has adopted the CBC as his afternoon home, dropping in 36 times since late September and finishing the Bike Monkeys program last week. He regularly shares the bike repair skills he has developed during the Bike MonkeysSean Pic program with other kids. At 4:30PM on Fridays, he rides down to Rays Market to buy the ingredients needed to make milkshakes and smoothies with our Bike Blender. In addition, Sean has made bikes to commute back and forth from school, fixed bikes for members of his family, helped a visually-impaired adult rebuild a tandem bike, and reconditioned a bike to give to one of our mentors from the University of New England. Sean certainly feels a sense of belonging at the CBC and has embraced the concepts of random acts of kindness.

Bottle Drive at Biddeford Hannaford
Bruce Church of Hannaford has arranged a way to donate to the CBC: a bottle drive. Stop by the Clynk Bottle Return atHannaford the Biddeford Hannaford during January or February 2008 to donate your bottles. During January mark "CBC" as the recipients of your donation. During February, mark "ALA-ME" to support our Charity Cycling Team's efforts for the American Lung Association of Maine. This is another easy way to help the CBC. Recycle your bottles from Christmas, New Years, and the Superbowl and support the CBC.

Volunteer Spotlight: Huggins Family

About five years ago Cary Huggins drifted into the Alfred Huggins Family PicOsher Center of the Northern York County Family YMCA searching for a program called Earn-a-Bike. Two of her sons, Dylan and Connor, completed the program. More recently, they connected with the CBC. For the past three years Cary, Dylan, and Conner have ridden in the Trek Across Maine. DylanDylan Pic volunteers as a drop-in mentor and Bike Monkeys instructor. His brothers Kiernan and Connor ocassionally stop in with their father to help in the shop; they also volunteered at the Saco Bay Criterium this last year. The Huggins have recruited home schooled friends to volunteer at the CBC and to ride in the Trek. Cary has even joined the CBC board. Thanks to the Huggins family for being community service role models.

New Year's Resolution?
Make volunteering at the CBC a New Year's resolution this year. Mentors are needed to work alongside kids during our drop-in bike repair/earn-a-bike sessions. Drop-in sessions are Monday through Friday 2 - 5 PM. Once we have a critical mass of new volunteers we will offer training in basic bike repair and mentoring best-practices. Sign-up now for a weekly or bi-weekly spot! Contact Aaron Lawton (cbcvista@gwi.net or 207-282-9700) for more volunteer information and check-out the Volunteer page on the CBC website.
Santa Syndrome
(n.) - focusing on the guy in the big red suit instead of the real reason for Christmas.

Don't let it happen to you or to those in your community! Joyful Harvest is teaching children the value of giving and not just getting. They will host an opportunity for kids to shop for gifts for their parents. They need low-cost items an adult would love to receive from a child (Gifts for men are particularly in need). Gifts can be delivered on the evening of December 19th or the morning of December 20th. For any additional questions, contact Cat Janson at 286-9105 or joyfull@gwi.net. Please help our friends at Joyful Harvest help kids have a meaningful Christmas this year.
