Vocational/Entrepreneurial Education

All Community Bicycle Center programs integrate vocational education skills with an entrepreneurial flavor.  Through the Bicycle Recycling Transportation Project (BRTP) donated bicycles are reconditioned and then leased to individuals in need of inexpensive bicycle transportation.  Our target customers are seasonal, foreign exchange visitors who serve the coastal southern Maine hospitality industry.  This pilot program began in 2006 to develop approaches to engage the youth we serve in all facets of this social entrepreneurial business.  The foreign exchange visitors are provided bike helmets, rear safety lights, safe bike riding rules of the road, and access to the educational bike shop to learn how to maintain their bikes. Partnerships have been forged with CIEE International Work and Study Programs, Council for Educational Travel USA, and local business.  In 2006 38 bikes were leased to foreign exchange visitors living and working in Old Orchard Beach, Saco, and Kennebunkport.
